State officials have decided a replacement for the Waterville Bridge should be built immediately upstream of the existing structure.

“The selection was based on multiple factors including cost, environmental, and historical considerations, public opinion, and length of closure,” the Ohio Department of Transportation district office in Bowling Green said in a statement.

The new bridge will be wider, with a sidewalk on one side and a multiuse path on the other along with two full lanes and shoulders. A roundabout is planned for the junction of State Rts. 64 and 65 near its east end.

The bridge is expected to cost $20 million and, subject to funding availability, is scheduled for construction in 2017. The highway is expected to be closed for up to 45 days toward the two-year project’s end while the bridge’s approaches are connected to existing roadways.
