As the summer begins to wind down, the city finally opened the second North Toledo pool, Jamie Farr Park Pool.

Councilman Paula Hicks-Hudson held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Wednesday alongside staff and campers from the Friendly Center. Members of Local 50 Plumbers, Steamfitters & Service Mechanics Union, and Laborers Local 500, the organizations that helped repair the pool, were also in attendance.

All of the city pools, except for Detwiler Pool, which did not open this summer, will close Aug. 2. Though the closing date gives people only about 10 days to enjoy the pool, Ms. Hicks-Hudson still is very excited.

“It‘s a promise to the community that they are important,” she said.

Brian Aiken, a field representative for Laborers Local 500, said: “We had to isolate where the breaks were, jackhammer the concrete, and expose the pipe.” He said there were eight breaks in the pipes — twice as many as Wilson Pool — which is why it took “a little longer” to open Jamie Farr Pool.

Ms. Hicks-Hudson said no money from the city was used to repair the pool.

The budget to open Wilson Pool, which was taken from the revenues received from a police vehicle auction, will go to help with operational costs of Jamie Farr Pool as well.
