The Toledo Area Sanitary District said mosquitoes captured in West Toledo tested positive for the West Nile Virus.

Paul Bauman, biologist for the district, said a large number of mosquitoes were found in a trap July 22, which indicates the virus may be present. He said crews treated the Five Points area in West Toledo with night fogging applications and afterward found mosquito activity was reduced by about 75 percent in that location.

He said it is not unusual for mosquitoes to test positive for West Nile this time of year. The real concern is about the insects transferring the disease to people. “We really want to focus on people eliminating water sources and taking their personal protective measures,” Mr. Bauman said.

Toledo-Lucas County Health Department officials said there have been no confirmed cases of West Nile infection in people this year.
