Youth Leadership Toledo hopes Color Run tops last year's total

After last year’s successful “Color for Camo” fun run, 10 students from Youth Leadership Toledo are back at it again.

The group is putting the finishing touches on this year’s 2-mile color run, which they hope will exceed last year’s $8,000 fund-raising total.

“We have a lot of partners throughout the Toledo area,” said Katie Karban, a planning team member and junior at St. Ursula Academy.

Sponsorships have brought in about $5,000, Katie said, with more to come from run participants. About 50 people have signed up for the May 13 run, compared to more than 200 participants last year.

Katie also received a $25,000 grant from the Million Dollar Round Table Foundation through Savage and Associates, where Katie’s father works. Between the two races and the grant, Katie and other students expect to have raised more than $40,000 after the race for Veterans Matter, a nonprofit founded by Ken Leslie to find homeless veterans housing.

“These kids were sophomores and they decided to care,” Mr. Leslie said. “They inspire me. ... That’s $25,000 because a student decided to matter.”

The family-friendly run/​walk is at Fossil Park in Sylvania. Advanced registration is $25 and can be made at veteransmatter.org/​colorrun. Registration at the event costs $30. Packet pick-up starts at 8:30 a.m., the run starts at 10 a.m.
