Search continues for Sandusky County Jail escaped inmates

FREMONT — The search continues this morning for two inmates who escaped Monday from Sandusky County’s jail, although though authorities won’t say where they are searching for them.

The Sandusky County Sheriff’s Office said Mickey M. Hardy, 37, and Jordan M. Chapman, 26, escaped at about 2:30 p.m. Monday. 

Authorities are using drones, helicopters, and K-9s as part of their ongoing search today. The Ohio State Highway Patrol, U.S Border Patrol and Fremont Police Department are assisting along with the Marshals.

The last time an inmate escaped from the jail was in 2015, Sandusky County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Ed Hastings said.

He said investigators believe the men escaped through a door at the outdoor recreation area. The door was faulty — although the sheriff’s office is still determining how. It is now fixed, Chief Deputy Hastings added.

The two escapees then ran through a cornfield, and are believed to have been picked up by someone.

Chapman was booked into jail June 23 on multiple receiving stolen property charges, and charges of obstruction, having a weapon under disability and a parole violation, according to the jail’s online inmate data base. 

Hardy was booked into jail July 6 on aggravated menacing and burglary charges, according to the online database. He’s also facing a charge for operating a vehicle while intoxicated.

The sheriff said the U.S. Marshals Service is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to each man’s capture. Anyone with information is asked to call the Sandusky County Dispatch Center at 419-332-6433.
