  • Doug Bush has been named president of ProMedica Defiance Regional Hospital, one of two leadership changes the health system announced Wednesday.

Mr. Bush, 46, will begin in January. He is currently associate vice president of strategic planning and business development for ProMedica and was previously the system’s administrative director of rehabilitation services.

He succeeds Dr. Neeraj Kanwal, who was named interim hospital president in February. Dr. Kanwal will continue to be senior vice president of pharmacy, a position he retained during his interim presidency.

Also announced Wednesday was Kate Sommerfeld’s appointment as president of social determinants of health. Ms. Sommerfeld, 31, will oversee the system’s 10-year, $50 million effort to address community health and neighborhood revitalization.

The financial commitment, funded in large part by a $28.5 million gift from the family of late philanthropist Russell J. Ebeid, will create several initiatives, including the ProMedica Ebeid Institute for Population Health to study the effects on health of factors such as income, education, and housing security.

Ms. Sommerfeld was previously ProMedica’s corporate director of advocacy and community impact.
