Local advocates call for preserving net neutrality
2/8/2018Lucas County Commissioner Pete Gerken and others expressed support Thursday for preserving net neutrality.
The Federal Communications Commission voted in December to repeal net neutrality. Advocates for its preservation said this removal allows broadband providers to block websites and charge for higher-quality service.
Local network engineer Sean Nestor and Move to Amend Toledo activist Doug Jambard-Sweet joined Mr. Gerken during a news conference at The Sojourner's Truth office, 1811 Adams St.
The Internet is a function of life and means to communicate, and it should not be unfairly exclusionary, Mr. Gerken said in an interview.
“When we start putting price tags on each level of that connection, it's unfair,” Mr. Gerken said.
Mr. Gerken said he hopes Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine will join 22 other attorneys general in suing the FCC and supporting a free and open Internet.
