Legal Aid to recognize 5 advocates at dinner

An advocate for homeless people, three lawyers who defend Hispanics from profiling, and an attorney who provides representation to those who struggle to afford legal help are recipients of Legal Aid’s 2013 Access to Justice Awards.

They are to be honored at the annual Access to Justice awards dinner April 30 at The Pinnacle, 1772 Indian Wood Circle, Maumee. Tickets are $100 a person and available by calling 419-930-2517 or at ablelaw.org.

Homeless advocate Ken Leslie, founder of Tent City, Toledo’s annual camp-out with the homeless, is to receive a Community Advocacy Award.

Attorneys John Murray, Leslie Murray, and Michael Stewart are to be honored with a Public Interest Award for protecting the rights of Hispanics who believe they have been victims of profiling by law enforcements. The trio are affiliated with the Murray & Murray law firm in Sandusky.

David J. Coyle of Shumaker, Loop & Kendrick will receive a Distinguished Service Award for his commitment to help needy residents of northwest Ohio receive better legal services.

The dinner is presented by Advocates for Basic Legal Equality, Legal Aid of Western Ohio, and the Toledo Bar Association Pro Bono Legal Services Program.
