Hundreds to get degrees from BGSU, UT, Owens

For some area students, this part of December is diploma time.

At the University of Toledo, 1,909 students are candidates for graduation Saturday at its fall commencement ceremony.

At Owens Community College, about 340 students - 50 from the school's Findlay campus - are eligible for diplomas. A ceremony is scheduled for 7 p.m. Dec. 21 in the Student Health and Activity Center at its Perrysburg Township campus.

Bowling Green State University has 1,075 students who are candidates for graduation at 10 a.m. Dec. 23 in Anderson Arena.

Speaker at UT's commencement ceremony will be Jim Petro, state auditor since 1995. He will address graduating students at 10 a.m. in Savage Hall.

The college of law will have its graduation at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Law Center auditorium. Judge Richard McQuade, Jr., appointed to the UT board of trustees in August, will be the college's commencement speaker. He is a former U.S. District Court judge in Toledo and former president and chief operating officer of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Ohio. Judge McQuade is a professional mediator and visiting judge.

Degrees to be awarded at UT include 75 PhD and education specialist degrees, 29 juris doctor law degrees, 595 master's degrees, 1,067 bachelor's degrees, and 143 associate degrees.

Maureen Fagans will be the commencement speaker for Owens, where it is a tradition for graduating students to deliver the commencement address, school officials said.

Ms. Fagans, 43, will receive an associate degree in architectural construction technology.

About 60 students are expected to receive degrees in arts and sciences, the equivalent of the first two years of a four-year bachelor's degree.

Bowling Green's commencement speaker will be Dr. Steven Rogelberg, an associate professor in psychology and recipient of last year's Master Teacher Award at BGSU.

The graduating class is expected to include 40 PhD and specialist degrees, 206 master's degrees, 793 bachelor's degrees, and 36 associate degrees.

The Medical College of Ohio and Lourdes College do not have a December graduation ceremony.
