Board in Wauseon hires principal for Burr Road school
5/2/2002The Wauseon board of education hired Delta Middle School principal Joseph Friess last week as the Burr Road Middle School principal.
“He's somebody who can step into a position replacing a guy who's been there for 23 years and leaves some big shoes to fill,” Wauseon Superintendent Marc Robinson said.
Richard Darcy, who has been principal of Burr Road for 23 years, submitted his notice of retirement to the school board in February.
Mr. Friess has been middle school principal for six years in the Pike-Delta-York district, where he assumes the superintendent's responsibilities when the superintendent is unavailable.
He was assistant high school principal and athletic director in Delta from 1994 to 1996 and taught business, computer, and employment skills classes at Four County Joint Vocational School from 1990 to 1994.
He is to start Aug. 1 at Burr Road, where he will be paid $64,500 a year. There are 540 pupils in grades six, seven, and eight in the middle school. Mr. Friess is paid $64,000 at Pike-Delta-York this year.
He was the second long-time administrator that the Pike-Delta-York district lost last week.
Earlier in the week, the school board approved the resignation of Deborah Ford, board treasurer and chief financial officer, effective May 31. She accepted a job with the Northern Buckeye Education Council, where she will be a help-desk coordinator for school treasurers in Lucas and Wood counties.
She has been employed by Pike-Delta-York for 21 years and has been treasurer since 1989. Her salary this year in Delta is $66,000. Ms. Ford said she is three years from retirement and is looking at her new job as a transition.
