TEMPERANCE — Bedford Schools is under investigation for possible discrimination against transgender students, according to the U.S. Department of Education.

The complaint, which involves one student in the K-12 school district, is being investigated by the education department’s Civil Rights Office, department spokesman David Thomas said.

“Because the investigation is ongoing, we can’t give you any further detail,” he said Thursday.

Superintendent Mark Kleinhans also said he cannot talk about specifics of the case while it is under investigation.

“We received a complaint letter from the Office of Civil Rights and that letter requested information from the school district. We are cooperating fully,” he said.

The investigation began Dec. 15, the day Mr. Kleinhans informed the school board of the issue.
