7/6/2003

Toledo firefighters extinguished an apartment fire early yesterday in a low-income complex and rescued its resident.

Authorities received a call about 1:35 a.m. at Ashland Manor Apartments, 2030 Ashland Ave., about a man who had set his apartment on fire.

Firefighters broke into the sixth-floor apartment and then restrained a man who attempted to jump out a window, police said in a report.

James M. Sims was transported to Toledo Hospital for exposure to fire and smoke inhalation, police said.

Fire department Battalion Chief Luis Santiago said the fire was ruled an arson and caused about $2,000 in damage. No firefighters were hurt in the blaze.
