A 16-year-old boy was in police custody yesterday, a day after he tried to assault a police officer with a baseball bat in South Toledo, authorities said.

Cristopher Beane, whose address was withheld by police, was arrested on charges of juvenile delinquency related to felonious assault on a police officer, resisting arrest, aggravated menacing, obstructing official business, and underage consumption of alcohol, according to the police report.

Young Beane, who was under house arrest, is accused of taking a baseball bat and leaving his father's house near Walbridge and Hiett avenues about 8:40 p.m. Friday. The boy was threatening neighbors with the bat, the report said. When police arrived, he fled and hid behind a 6-foot privacy fence, according to reports. When Officer Tyson Phalen approached, the boy allegedly ran toward the officer with the bat. The officer also ran toward the boy, who started swinging the bat at the officer's head from about four feet away, the report said.

The suspect fled and hid in the rafters of a garage in the 1300 block of Gordon Street. He was sprayed with pepper spray before coming down. He resisted arrest by spitting at and kicking officers while being handcuffed, and he kicked and hit his head against the cage in the back seat of a patrol vehicle, the report said.
