TIFFIN — Seneca County Prosecutor Derek DeVine announced Monday that officers who killed a man in a May shootout acted lawfully.

Police shot and killed Scott Bloomfield, 31, on May 9 after he attempted to remove his estranged wife from her car on Schonhardt Street, and later barged into a North Tecumseh Drive home and stabbed Johnny Reino, 25. Mr. Reino’s mother said Mr. Bloomfield threatened to shoot her son for dating his wife.

Deputy Luke Cantu was shot in the shoulder during the incident.

"Based upon our review of all of the evidence, we have concluded that the responding officers conducted themselves well within the law and that they were justified in using deadly force,” Mr. DeVine wrote in a news release.

He said the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation conducted the inquiry, interviewing dozens of witnesses and reviewing video of the shooting.

Mr. Bloomfield’s estranged wife had a civil-protection order against him, and he was charged with domestic violence in August, 2016 after she reported that he had choked her. The case was dismissed Oct. 28.
