Mr. Cordrey left his home about 5 a.m., and a relative reported him missing shortly after 7 a.m. when he did not return. First responders found his vehicle less than an hour later and saw footprints toward the water, he said.

They removed him from the water about 9:30 a.m. He was not breathing, and later pronounced dead at Mercy Health St. Vincent Medical Center, the chief said.

Mr. Cordrey spent at least two hours in the water. He had health issues he was concerned about at the time, Chief Goss said.
