Dogs attack Toledo police officers executing North Toledo search warrant

More than 30 dogs and puppies were found in deplorable living conditions in a North Toledo house after Toledo police officers executed a drug-related search warrant Thursday night.

Toledo Police SWAT and vice narcotics detectives were executing the search warrant at about 9 p.m. Thursday at a home in the 3100 block of Chase Street, officials said.

As officers entered the house, they were attacked by multiple dogs and shot and killed five, Sgt. Kevan Toney said Friday. The remaining dogs and puppies still are at the home, but Lucas County Canine Care & Control and the city of Toledo’s neighborhoods division are involved in the ongoing investigation, Sergeant Toney said.

A woman was at home during the incident, but no charges have been filed in the case, Sergeant Toney said.

“Dog feces covered the residence, and veteran officers described the scene as the worst living conditions they have ever seen,” police said in a statement.

Sergeant Toney said Toledo’s neighborhoods division had been looking into prior complaints related to code enforcement at the home. Lucas County Canine Care & Control is helping to figure out how many of the dogs are licensed, he added.

“It’s a number of organizations working together to figure out what’s best not only for the health and care of the canines but also the people who live next door to this residence,” he said.

The investigation is ongoing.
