While a student at Rogers High School, Tyler Evans would make a point to visit the school office every day and say hello to everyone.

He smiled a lot, said Patty Mazur, director of communications for Toledo Public Schools. He was a football player and graduated in May.

“He was very well-liked by staff and students,” she said.

Police are still investigating the 18-year-old man’s death after he was shot Tuesday in the Old West End.

Mr. Evans was shot in the head and chest, said Dr. Cynthia Beisser, deputy coroner for the Lucas County Coroner’s Office. Police said the shooting occurred about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the 2400 block of Glenwood Avenue, near West Delaware Avenue. The teen was rushed to Mercy Health St. Vincent Medical Center, where he later died.

His death was ruled a homicide, Dr. Beisser said.

Lt. Kevan Toney, a spokesman for the Toledo Police Department, said Mr. Evans may have been meeting someone in the area where he was shot, but police do not yet know if the supposed meeting was related to the shooting.

“That’s something we’re looking into,” Lieutenant Toney said.

Ms. Mazur said the high school has counselors available for students and staff members. Anytime a death of a student or staff member occurs, she said the district makes sure support is offered to those who need it.

“That helps students if they have questions, [or] if they just need some help to get through the next couple of days after losing a friend,” she said.
