Cordray may announce governor candidacy Tuesday

COLUMBUS — Former federal consumer watchdog Richard Cordray plans to hold an event Tuesday in his hometown of Grove City to launch his candidacy for the Democratic nomination for governor.

Mr. Cordray declined to comment on the purpose of the event to be held at a downtown diner, Lilly’s Kitchen Table, when contacted Monday, but he is expected to make his long-expected candidacy official.

According to an adviser, Mr. Cordray is expected to talk about creating a system that works for everyone in keeping with his role with the federal government. He will then embark on a tour across the state to discuss his vision.

The former Ohio attorney general, treasurer, and state representative recently resigned as the head of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, which was created in the wake of the 2008 Wall Street meltdown.

He will not be on stage Monday night when four announced Democrat candidates take to the stage in Cleveland for their third official debate. On stage will be state Sen. Joe Schiavoni (D., Boardman), former Akron area congressman Betty Sutton, former Cincinnati state Rep. Connie Pillich, and Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley.

A fifth announced candidate, Ohio Supreme Court Justice William O’Neill, is expected to drop out of the race once Mr. Cordray enters. He also will not participate in Monday’s debate at the City Club of Cleveland.

Mr. Cordray resigned his federal post with half a year left in his five-year term. He was appointed by President Obama as the bureau’s first director.
