WESTLAND, Mich. — Suburban-Detroit police say they’ve arrested three men accused of beating an Afghanistan war veteran after making derogatory comments about the U.S. military.

The Detroit News reports that police say they made the arrests in the attack that happened about 2 a.m. Thursday outside a 7-Eleven store.

Twenty-five-year-old U.S. Army veteran Adam Wagner of Livonia tells investigators the three men confronted him inside the store. Police say they followed him into the parking lot and began mocking him after they “apparently noticed military insignias on the victim’s vehicle.”

Police say tips from the public led to the arrests. They say the three are in jail while authorities determine the charges.

Police say a hospital treated Wagner for a broken nose, facial lacerations and other head injuries.
