2nd Monroe Tim Hortons employee diagnosed with hepatitis A
12/28/2017MONROE — A second employee at a Tim Hortons restaurant in Monroe has been diagnosed with hepatitis A, health officials said Thursday.
The restaurant, at 404 S. Monroe St., already had one staff member diagnosed earlier this month. Monroe County Health Department officials opened a vaccination clinic for customers who ate or drank products at the restaurant from Dec. 10-28, as well as for food service workers, and first responders.
There are 14 confirmed cases of hepatitis A in Monroe County, part of a larger outbreak of 630 cases in southeast Michigan dating back to August, 2016.
Hepatitis A is a liver disease caused by the hepatitis A virus. It can spread through feces of people with the virus, through contaminated food and water, or through sexual contact.
Symptoms include fatigue, poor appetite, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, dark urine, and jaundice, according to the county health department. Symptoms typically appear two to six weeks after exposure.
