Marvin M. Bergman, 77, who was principal of Bedford High School for many years, died Thursday in Toledo Hospital.

Mr. Bergman died from cancer, his wife, Gloria Bergman, said.

“He was a teacher for more than 30 years and really enjoyed it,” Mrs. Bergman said.

Mr. Bergman was born and reared in West Toledo. After attending the former DeVilbiss High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and was stationed in Texas for a time, his wife said.

After his military service, Mr. Bergman attended the University of Toledo and received bachelor's degrees in business and education and a master's degree in education.

Mr. Bergman and his wife married in July, 1950. That same year, he took his first teaching job in a one-room schoolhouse in Bedford Township.

The bulk of his career was spent at Bedford High School, where he was principal for more than 15 years, his wife said.

“I think he really got along with the kids, and they seemed to like him really well,” Mrs. Bergman said. “He was very easygoing and never got riled up when the kids acted up.”

Mr. Bergman retired in 1981 and spent his retirement traveling and playing golf, his wife said.

The couple's son, Rand Bergman, died in 1987.

Surviving is his wife, Gloria Bergman.

Services were private. Arrangements were handled by the Foth-Dorfmeyer Mortuary.

The family requests tributes to the Hospice of Northwest Ohio in Perrysburg Township or the American Cancer Society.
