PHOENIX — Three people were killed and four others seriously injured in an Interstate 17 collision between a wrong-way driver’s car and a minivan carrying an extended family.

The state Department of Public Safety says the accident occurred early today in the southbound lanes of I-17 about 30 miles north of Phoenix.

The DPS says three adults in the rented minivan were killed. The injured include the wrong-way driver plus two adults and a child in the minivan.

Identities of those killed or injured weren’t released. However, DPS Officer Carrick Cook says the wrong-way driver is a Phoenix man in his 60s and that authorities suspect he was impaired.

An accident Monday on a Tempe freeway ramp killed a wrong-way driver and an off-duty Mesa police officer.
