Quakes occur in 3 parts of Alaska; no reports of damage, no tsunami
7/25/2014JUNEAU, Alaska — Seismologists in Alaska say earthquakes have jolted three different parts of the state.
Several earthquakes, including a 5.9 magnitude one, occurred around the same location early Friday in southeast Alaska. The U.S. Geological Survey says light shaking was felt around Juneau, about 100 miles to the east.
An unrelated 4.3 magnitude earthquake was felt in Kodiak and no one reported feeling another unrelated 3.7 quake in Alaska’s interior.
There are no immediate reports of damage.
Alaska Earthquake Center seismologist Natasha Ruppert says it’s somewhat unusual to have unrelated quakes strong enough to be felt in two parts of the state.
The magnitude 5.9 quake in southeast Alaska was immediately preceded by a 5.3 foreshock and followed by a 4.6 aftershock and multiple other aftershocks.
No tsunami is expected.
