BEREA, Ohio — A record 53.4 million vehicles entered the Ohio Turnpike in 2015, breaking the toll road’s nine-year-old traffic record, the turnpike announced Tuesday.

The number of vehicles that used the 241-mile toll road last year marked a 4.1 percent increase over 2014, and the 3,001,286,889 combined miles those vehicles traveled represented just the second time in turnpike history that traffic mileage has exceeded 3 billion, the turnpike said.

“Relatively low gas prices, mild weather, and positive economic growth all contributed as factors in record traffic volume in 2015,” said Randy Cole, the turnpike’s executive director.

Use of electronic tolling, not available on the Ohio Turnpike 10 years ago, also increased last year, with 47.6 percent of car drivers and 82.1 percent of commercial vehicle operators paying their tolls using E-ZPass — both 2.1 percentage points higher than in 2014.
