St. George Festival kicks off season
6/29/2002Make way for a summer of food festivals, not only in Toledo, but also surrounding communities.
Among the local traditions is the 26th Annual Summer Festival featuring Middle Eastern foods, held by St. George Antiochian Orthodox Cathedral July 11-14 on the church grounds at 3754 Woodley Rd. Festival hours are 5 to 10 p.m. Thursday, 5 to midnight Friday, noon to midnight Saturday, and noon to 10 p.m. Sunday.
The family event includes children's games in Cameltown, amusement rides, a moonwalk, face painting, and sand art; the Marketplace; Middle Eastern music and entertainment, and the Coffee House, where Turkish coffee is served. Tours of the cathedral are also available.
Best of all, wonderful Middle Eastern foods will be prepared by the parishioners of St. George Cathedral. Featured will be stuffed grape leaves, baked and raw kibee, meat pies, salad, zalabee (fried dough), french fries, hot dogs, chicken tawook, Lebanese gyros, falafel, hummus, kafta, Arabic pastries, and various other Lebanese specialties.
The combination plate at $8.50 includes meat pie, baked kibbee, grape leaf, green beans and rice, and Syrian bread. Items can also be purchased a la carte. Pastries are sold by the piece and by the dozen. Take-outs are available.
Food demonstrations beginning at 3 p.m. on Saturday will include how to make hummus and Syrian potato salad.
Chairwoman of the event is Beverly Bardwell. The Ladies Benevelent Society cooks the Lebanese food.
Admission is $2. Children 10 and under are free.

Comerica Tastefest in Detroit will be July 3-7 from 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, and 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday on West Grand Boulevard between Woodward Avenue and the Lodge Freeway in Detroit's New Center. Nearly 40 eateries will provide more than 175 dishes and vegetarian options, from barbecue, roasted corn, and gooey hot fudge sundaes to fresh-squeezed lemonade. The Akron All-American Rib Fest is set for noon to midnight July 3-7 on Main Street between Church and University streets in Akron. Favorite bands from the area will perform from open to close. The National Cherry Festival in Traverse City, Mich., on July 6-13 features cherry delicacies, cherry orchard tours, parades, family and children's events, and entertainment. More than 150 events are planned along the shores of Lake Michigan's Grand Traverse Bay. The Longest Cherry Sundae will be at 11 a.m. July 6 at the Festival Open Space. Now in its fourth printing, The National Firefighters Recipe Book compiled by Candice De Barr and Louis A. De Pasquale has recipes from firefighters in all 50 states. From Ohio come three recipes from the Toledo Fire Department.
