Lopez deserves better
8/5/2013Please stop cutting up Toledo mayoral candidate Anita Lopez; it’s an insult to Toledo and to Blade readers (“Lopez negatives mounting,” commentary, July 23).
Ms. Lopez, the Lucas County auditor, is given credit for qualities we’d all like to see in a mayor. But because of her management style, we’re led to believe that she could take Toledo to a Detroit-style bankruptcy. That is absurd.
Let’s see some balanced and fair reporting on Ms. Lopez’ candidacy, which seems to be the way you are approaching the other mayoral candidates.

Lopez not ready to be mayor
Ms. Lopez is accessible, gracious, well educated, and dedicated. She will make a great mayor of Toledo someday.
Meanwhile, she needs to learn that the employees of the auditor’s office do not work for her. They work for us. It is her job to hire the best people available, not those who provide her with campaign contributions, either directly or through their union connections.
I sympathize with a single mother who is raising children and taking care of her elderly parents. However, if the caregiver is paid more than $94,000 a year, with great health coverage and a wonderful retirement program, there should be plenty of money to ensure a good credit rating.
Ms. Lopez has exercised poor judgement on several occasions. But with experience, she could be a good mayor someday.

Law must stay out of abortion issue
Because the decision to have a baby or to have an abortion is personal and moral, the law should not be involved (“The Texas-Ireland abortion connection,” op-ed column, July 24).
The question of when life begins is unanswerable. Basing laws on Biblical texts is a poor practice, because the laws apply to people of all religions. Even so, the Bible is silent on abortion. The decision to have a child should be left to the potential parents, physicians, and the God of their understanding.

Texas stand on life questioned
The tremendous outpouring of support for this legislation has demonstrated how Texas stands for life,” declared Gov. Rick Perry in support of that state’s recent vote on highly restrictive limits on abortions (“Anti-abortion bill passes House in Texas; Senate next,” July 11).
Yet Texas has the highest rate of executions in the nation. What hypocrisy.
