Dems right to focus on air, water

5/14/2014

E.J. Dionne’s April 26 op-ed column, “Democrats face uphill battle to woo swing voters for 2014,” offered much good advice to Democrats for this election year. To that advice I add: environmental responsibility.

Democrats value people and the environment above industries that extract and sell fossil fuels. Republicans support toxic industries with federal subsidies, and deny that environmental harm is produced.

Democrats urge the development of clean energy, which most Republicans resist as a threat to fossil-fuel investors and producers.

Mr. Dionne suggested that Democrats who seek public office should stand up for the Affordable Care Act. Most Americans like what that act provides.

People who want not only good health care and good jobs, but also a healthy environment, will find support and progress by electing Democrats.

Why was pool upkeep ignored?
How did the City of Toledo allow its public pools to fall into such disrepair (“Protesters demand opening of pools,” May 6)? Where was the yearly maintenance?

Was pool maintenance considered unimportant, because anyone with disposable income could afford to go to local water parks?

I moved back to Toledo as soon as I was able as an adult, because I remembered it as an honest, humane place to live. I l think it could be again. I hope the lack of accountability is temporary.

Naming rights to pools great idea
To the Readers’ Forum letter writer who suggested that City of Toledo pools be sponsored by local companies: That is a great idea (“To open pools, seek firms’ help,” May 5).

Companies spend tons of money on naming rights for ball parks and arenas. Who cares if the pool has the name of a local company, as long as it is open?

Pools’ priority comes after streets
I am not sure which City of Toledo pools or how many of them should be opened, but to city officials I say: Please fix our streets .

Take up collection to open pools
Toledo should fix its streets. If city residents want pools open, they should take up a collection and pay to have them opened. Good streets are more important than pools.
