Lake Erie speaks; we need to listen

8/10/2014

No one should be surprised at the condition of Lake Erie. There is ample evidence that the condition of the lake was well understood more than 40 years ago.

Had the resources and political will needed to address the problems of Lake Erie been allocated then, we probably wouldn’t be facing the crisis now.

Much has clearly happened in the scientific community since then. Perhaps now is the time to listen to the scientists and Lake Erie itself.

Crisis put city in a positive light

Toledo Mayor D. Michael Collins’ leadership during the water crisis was spectacular. Leadership from all other levels of government was equally supportive in bringing this water crisis to an end, temporarily. And the community responded well.

The water crisis will happen again if Lake Erie is ignored. The Toledo experience should be the international rallying cry for cleaning up the Great Lakes and other water sources around the world.

Toledo doesn’t get much acclaim, but this event has the potential to be a positive game changer.

Collins’ actions embarrassing

Mayor Collins is embarrassing this city, one news conference at a time. During the water crisis, he babbled during televised interviews.

Between his denying blight, his goal of not allowing smokers to work for the city, and his pathetic attempts at explaining the water situation, he is an embarrassment, locally and nationally.

The water crisis was temporarily resolved despite him, not because of him.

Did businesses push crisis’ end?

I don’t believe Toledo water is safe. I believe that local politicians bowed to pressure from local businesses to call an end to the water crisis to get customers back into stores and restaurants.

Two days after testing shut down the water supply, officials said the water is safe. But I saw the glass of green sludge taken from Lake Erie near the water intake building.

I don’t care what their party affiliation is — politicians can’t be trusted.

Keep free water for the needy

I saw cars that seemed to be new or almost new pulling into the various water distribution centers last weekend to pick up free water.

Someone who can afford a nice vehicle should be able to buy water. The water that was given for free should have been reserved for families who really needed it.
