It is heartbreaking to see our flag at half staff after each of the frequent episodes of gun violence in the United States. The flag should be left at half staff until effective national gun legislation is made law.

Raising and lowering of the flag following such massacres has become rote and meaningless and does nothing to make our citizens safe.

Pipelines are a serious danger

A Nov. 8 letter writer said anti-pipeline advocates are lacking in scientific knowledge (”Pipeline hysteria is nonsensical”).

The writer stated that one pipeline near her has not exploded as proof of pipeline safety. This old pipeline is not of the size of the megasized pipelines now being built. Most pipelines of that age are less than 30 inches in diameter. The new high-pressure export natural gas pipelines run huge catastrophic risks that only reasonable safety setbacks can solve.

The writer does not realize that the opposition is growing across the country. Abundant alternative energy is now competitive with fossil fuels.
