To the editor: Politicizing jail suicide is wrong

The story about a jailed inmate’s suicide is tragic  (Nov. 27, “Female inmate dies in Lucas Co. jail”).

I, however, have a problem with the last three paragraphs of the story that are not related to the story line at all. The story morphs into an advertisement for why Toledo needs a new jail.

In addition, Maj. John Sylvester and Sheriff John Tharp seemingly suggest that Toledo needs a new jail because the phone cords are too long and there are restricted views. How ridiculous are those statements?

So is marijuana legal or illegal?

In the Nov. 28 article, “Drugs find way into jail cells,” I was very surprised to learn that the No. 2 two drug making its way into jail cells was marijuana.

How can marijuana be classified as an illegal drug when it can be grown and harvested and sold in specialty stores in northwest Ohio? Thousands of dollars are being spent to make people aware of the danger of opioid addiction, yet marijuana, which is a stepping stone to the eventual use of hard drugs, is considered a recreational drug that can be sold legally in Ohio. 

Legislators blew it when they let marijuana become legal to buy, yet it is still classified as an illegal drug. You can’t have it both ways.

Now that Toledo Public Schools has agreed to have “sanctuary” schools, what do we do if the government decides to withhold funding?

Get ready Toledo for additional levies coming up in the future to fund this mistake.
