To the editor: Can we overlook misdeeds?

2/12/2018

My heart is broken. Wayne Pacelle of the Humane Society of the United States is a leading light of the animal welfare movement, and a rock star whose books have all been New York Times best-sellers. He is also supporting the current signature campaign to have puppy mills outlawed in Ohio by a vote on the 2018 Ohio ballot.

I met Mr. Pacelle in 2010 when he came to Toledo in support of another Ohio petition, one that received hundreds of thousands of signatures.

He is my hero, even if he is obviously flawed, as are we all. His good works far outweigh the indiscretions that have caused his resignation from HSUS.

The animals have lost their best friend.

The truth about Davis-Besse

I am writing in reference to the Feb. 4 letter, “Davis-Besse is a curse on future generations.” Let’s set the record straight with facts, not fiction.

Davis-Besse has been in operation since 1978, providing pollution-free energy to northwestern Ohio without ever harming the surrounding environment.

The claim that the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) simply “rubber-stamped” the license renewal is the farthest thing from the truth. The plant had to do extensive testing and provide reams of information to the NRC to get the license renewed.

As far as the cracks in the shield building, these are hairline cracks that appear in a lot of older concrete and pose no immediate threat.

If the gentleman knows anything about nuclear plants, he knows they call it the “shield building” because it shields the containment vessel, which is a 1-inch thick metal building that houses the reactor. There are no safety systems outside the containment vessel for concrete to fall into and create this nuclear disaster he described in his letter.

These are the facts as I know them because I worked at this plant since its construction came above ground in 1972.

Bring troops back before parade

I respectfully suggest that President Trump postpone his military parade until the U.S. can declare victory in Afghanistan and bring our troops home.
