To the editor: Keep the jail out of downtown so Toledo can develop

The area outlined by the “Keep the jail downtown” group as a possible site for the new jail seems to encompass most, if not all, of the area that is ripe to continue the dynamic regrowth of downtown Toledo.
The parcels on North Detroit mostly cover vacant land. It seems that safety would not be an issue with the jail being there, as there would be an increase in security and police personnel in the area.
When picking the site of the new jail, I believe consideration should be given to the overall good of our city by maintaining and continuing the revitalization of our downtown area.

Cut first, tax second
On April 12, The Blade’s legal notices section mentions public hearings on Lucas County’s proposal to raise the motor vehicle license tax another $5.
Can’t the Lucas County commissioners find the money they need from budget cuts, or management or staff reductions, rather than levying yet another tax on the backs of auto owners?

Let’s make elections fair again
I am fairly certain most of us would feel more confident about the influence of a vote cast for a reality TV show contestant than a vote cast for our local representative at our polling place.
However, with the passage of Issue One, our state Constitution will no longer permit the state legislature to pass a congressional redistricting plan without adhering to certain bipartisan fairness requirements.
Move over Dancing With The Stars. There is a fair, new election in town.
