To the editor: Keep the jail downtown

After reading The Blade’s May 20 article on the new jail, “New jail will save money,” it has become apparent that Sheriff John Tharp has caved in to the Lucas County commissioners.
Sheriff Tharp says that the Lucas County jail hasn’t been maintained. Who’s fault is that? The county commissioners. These double-dipping Democrats have run Toledo and Lucas County for the past 30 years. Why weren’t they watching the jail fall apart? Sheriff Tharp wanted the jail downtown, where it belongs, but has since caved in to Pete Gerken and his cohorts, Tina Skeldon Wozniak and Carol Contrada.
There must be some room in downtown Toledo — how many more coffee shops and bars can open and still make money? Put the jail downtown where it belongs.

Enough outrage
Hardly a newscast goes by or an article written where some individual isn’t outraged about something. It is the most overused word in use today.
What if I am just a tad peeved or mildly aggravated? Do I have to upgrade to outraged to be heard? Everything that President Trump does brings outrage from some segment of the population. Huge numbers of people are also outraged when something good happens that makes President Trump look good. Get over it and enjoy the fact that there is finally a president who says what he means and gets results instead of more and more lip service trying to convince people to think a certain way.
I’m sure that someone reading this will be outraged. After all, it is the trendy thing to do nowadays.

Privatize public utilities
You literally need a machete to cut out the bloated cost of service payroll at Toledo’s Department of Public Utilities. It has been the dumping ground of high-paid, inefficient personnel inside the city of Toledo for years.
To receive the buy-in from our surrounding communities for a regional water deal, the overhead needs to be slashed. The citizens of Toledo won’t see any drop off in the marginal service they receive already.
If one department in this city screams for privatization, it is Public Utilities. The surrounding communities should not be asked to “float our bloat”
