Marc A. Thiessen’s recent column suggested that bigotry is the main reason for President Trump’s low approval rating and that, otherwise, his policies are great for the country (Aug. 17, “Trump’s failure to condemn alt-right bigots tars his presidency”).
There are other important issues on which many of us are in disagreement with the President: the reality of climate change, mortgaging the future of the country to reward the wealthy, starting a trade war that will ultimately hurt many, offending our allies, cozying up to dictators, attempts to undermine health insurance, and his poor choices of cabinet members.
The President’s stance on these issues bodes a troubled future for us all.

Be wary of grand juries
While we should all be horrified if the Pennsylvania grand jury report on the Catholic Church sex abuse scandal is anywhere near accurate, we should also be aware that grand juries hear only the witnesses the prosecutor wants them to hear and none of those witnesses is subject to cross examination.

Gun ad hurt community
A letter in The Blade’s Aug. 20 Reader’s Forum made the case that a large front-page ad for guns “is no big deal.” I feel compelled to disagree. It is a big deal.
When that ad appeared on the cover of The Blade, I was shocked. At a time when our country has been overwhelmed by senseless mass killings, why does our community’s newspaper promote a huge display of firearms?
I’m thinking that the ad revenue generated by that advertisement’s front-page placement must have been more important than what The Blade’s readers will regard as a loss of integrity.
