For over 50 years, Msgr. Schmit served the youth of northwest Ohio. A year after his ordination, he was appointed to Catholic Charities and was named assistant director of the Catholic Youth Organization. Under his guidance, the CYO evolved into the most successful unit in the state — an original four basketball teams eventually reached over 600! Having been first appointed assistant director of Catholic Charities and Director of Diocesan Youth Department in 1942, Monsignor expanded the Catholic Club Ministry to inner city youth. He further expanded CYO athletic, cultural and spiritual activities to the entire Diocese of Toledo.

Recently there have been a couple of good editorial letters regarding speed and speed limits on The Blade editorial page. The dictionary definition of the word limit is “the maximum allowable amount permitted,” not a suggestion to be ignored. Therefore, a speed limit is the maximum speed allowed on that roadway.

It hasn’t even been a year since President Trump, the temporary resident of the White House, unilaterally announced he was adding a $200 million ballroom. (He didn’t mention he’d be tearing down the century-old East Wing to make room.) In the 11 months since, the estimated cost of the project that he repeatedly boasts is “under budget and ahead of schedule” has grown by a factor of seven. So has Trump’s list of capital vanity projects: a renamed, redesigned Trump-Kennedy Center, a 250-foot triumphal arch, a so-called heroes garden of 250 statues, a $13 million resurfaced Reflecting Pool, gold-leafed equestrian statues, a South Lawn arena for Sunday’s UFC cage fights celebrating Trump’s 80th birthday, and a new plan he sprung just last week for a “Trump promenade” from the Lincoln Memorial to the Potomac River.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — The landmark moments in the history of women are well-known and widely recognized: 1848 (the Seneca Falls Convention that challenged the prevailing status of women); 1920 (the ratification of the 19th Amendment, giving women the vote); 1972 (Title IX, banning sex-based discrimination in activities underwritten by the federal government); and 1973 and 2022 (the creation of abortion rights and the overturning of Roe vs. Wade).

While city council members are wringing their hands over weak Ohio gun laws or cuts in state funding as a cause for the mass shooting at the Old West End Festival on Saturday, they should be ashamed of their inaction on the crime that rocked Toledo last June.
