North Toledo residents will often tell you they feel forgotten. They feel overlooked, disenfranchised, and disconnected from the systems that are supposed to serve them. Many have lost trust in government and organizations after years of feeling ignored.

Republican Derek Merrin has President Trump’s “complete and total endorsement” in the 9th congressional district rematch with incumbent Democrat Marcy Kaptur. But if he wins, Mr. Merrin will not serve northwest Ohio well unless his first and foremost allegiance is to voters here and the issues that assist them.

Gov. Mike DeWine’s take on his biggest mistake as Ohio’s chief executive officer misses the mark by a mile. Mr. DeWine was the guest at the Columbus Metropolitan Club last week, where he repeated his frequent mea culpa for signing a gambling bill into law, which he called his “biggest mistake” as governor.

DETROIT — Michigan politics frequently offer surprises, but there are only two times in the last half century when I have been truly shocked. One was in 1990, when John Engler beat Gov. James Blanchard despite polls showing that just couldn’t happen.

You may be familiar with the saying, “when you don’t buy local, your money walks.” Well, that’s exactly what’s happening with the $45 million the Ohio Department of Education received last year from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to feed children’s lunch and breakfast at school in the eight counties that make up Ohio’s 9th congressional district: Defiance, Erie, Fulton, Lucas, Ottawa, Sandusky, Williams, and Wood.

In response to the May 21 article, “Manipulation of districts in Congress must halt,” I find myself in partial agreement with the author’s central argument: gerrymandering has spiraled far beyond its intended purpose and no longer reflects the true populations of many states. The practice has become a tool for entrenching political power rather than ensuring fair representation.

Time flies. Dates creep up. Meetings get missed. Most of the time, forgetting to be somewhere means a sheepish apology and a request to reschedule. But not when we miss a court date. Forgetting to appear in court on the right day and at the right time can have serious consequences: fines, lost wages, unemployment, and even jail.
