As long as America’s war with Iran doesn’t veer any further than it already has into the deaths of innocent people and wanton destruction, little physical harm is done by the back and forth of absurd demands. But the skyrocketing price of gas because of the impasse is imposing a cost on all Americans.

DETROIT — The vast majority of media attention before last week’s primary election in Michigan was focused on the battle between U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens and Abdul El-Sayed for the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate, a contest Mr. El-Sayed narrowly won. But it wasn’t till the next day that many people noticed that U.S. Rep. Shri Thanedar, one of the oddest members of Congress, had unexpectedly lost his seat.

FOR THE past one and a half years America has witnessed an aberrant mix of political opportunism, blatant lies, personal enrichment in the name of American people, and outright defiance of law, customs, traditions, and history. I have often heard the pungent phrase: “Well, what do you expect? Trump is being Trump.” That somehow legitimizes the sordid mess being created by this administration.

This fall, Sylvania Schools will ask voters to approve an earned income-tax levy, and the district has laid out what would happen if it fails: half-day kindergarten, the end of high school busing, deep cuts to special education, and fewer support staff. It is a sobering list, but is not evidence that Sylvania Schools have been careless. It is the bill that comes due when the state stops paying its share.

GILFORD, N.H. — Taped on the refrigerator are four pictures of the bear that recently wandered behind Robby Cosgriff’s house. On the opposite wall is a plea for contributions of arts and crafts supplies (but please, no yarn!) for the local Boys & Girls Club. On the tables are neatly assembled trays of food: roast beef, turkey, smoked trout, fresh fruit, artichokes. Mixing in the crowd during the proceedings is state Sen. Patrick Long, wearing a T-shirt with a giant flag motif emblazoned with the message “Hate Has No Home Here.”
