BGSU ties in hockey season-opener
10/12/2013SCHENECTADY, N.Y. — Three second-period goals salvaged a 3-3 tie with host Union for the Bowling Green State University hockey team to begin the 2013-14 season.
Dan DeSalvo, Pierre-Luc Mercier, and Bryce Williamson each tallied markers to help overcome a 2-0 first-period deficit.
Tyler Burke finished with 24 stops in net for the Falcons (0-0-1).
NBA
ORLANDO, Fla. — Overall No. 1 draft pick Anthony Bennett scored 14 of his 16 points in the fourth quarter and Dion Waiters had 21 as the Cavaliers rallied for a 110-105 preseason victory over the Orlando Magic.
Bennett, who missed his first five shots while picking up five fouls, hit his last six field goal attempts, including two 3-pointers. Kyrie Irving finished with 17 points and five assists for Cleveland (2-0).
Victor Oladipo, the second pick in the draft, led Orlando with 18 points and three assists. He hit his first three shots, including two 3-pointers, as the Magic built a 54-36 lead with just under 4 minutes left in the first half.
■ AUBURN HILLS, Mich. — Pistons guard Rodney Stuckey has had surgery on his broken right thumb.
The team said he'll wear a splint on the thumb for two weeks before being re-evaluated.
The Pistons announced that Stuckey broke a bone in his thumb after catching it in a car door. He averaged 11.5 points in 76 games last season.
College football
The Mid-American Conference has made a commitment to a newly created bowl game in Boca Raton, Fla., for a six-year period (2014-2019). The bowl will be owned and operated by ESPN. The Boca Raton Bowl will be a pre-Christmas bowl game and will be televised nationally on ESPN or ESPN2. The Boca Raton Bowl will be played at FAU Stadium, an open-air stadium opened in 2011 which seats nearly 30,000 fans on the campus of Florida Atlantic University.
The creation of the Boca Raton Bowl is the beginning of a series of planned bowl announcements over the next several weeks and the centerpiece of a joint agreement between several FBS conferences. The MAC will play Conference USA in the Boca Raton Bowl in 2014 and the American Athletic Conference in 2015.

KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Graham Zusi and Jozy Altidore scored second-half goals to give the United States a 2-0 victory over Jamaica. The win clinched first place for the Americans in their World Cup qualifying group for the third straight cycle.
The sides had played to a stalemate through the first 77 minutes before Alejandro Bedoya got the ball on the wing. He crossed to Zusi, whose shot from about 12 yards beat goalkeeper DuWayne Kerr and ignited his home-team crowd of 18,467 decked out in red, white and blue.
Golf
SAN MARTIN, Calif. — After a year spent traveling the world, Brooks Koepka suddenly is in a position to play a lot more golf at home.
Koepka surged to the top of the leaderboard Friday in the Frys.com Open with a 7-under 64. He had a two-shot lead among the early finishers at CordeValle.
He was two shots ahead of Robert Garrigus (63) and Jim Herman (66).
■ CARY, N.C. — Larry Nelson shot his age for a share of the lead in the SAS Championship, while Nick Faldo failed to finish the round in his first regular Champions Tour event.
The 66-year-old Nelson had a 6-under 66 on Friday to join Russ Cochran and Mark Mouland atop the leaderboard at Prestonwood.
Faldo withdrew after 12 holes because of an elbow injury.
■ KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — Ilhee Lee of South Korea kept her lead in the LPGA Malaysia on Friday while 18-year-old American Lexi Thompson shot an 8-under 63 Friday and was one stroke behind after two rounds.
Lee, seeking her second title on the LPGA Tour, had a 65 that left her at 13-under 129.
She led by four early on, but Thompson surged on the back nine with four birdies around an eagle on the par-4 14th.
NFL
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — New York Jets tight end Kellen Winslow, Jr., was suspended without pay for four games by the NFL for violating the league's policy on performance enhancing substances.
Winslow, the team's leading receiver with 17 catches, is immediately beginning his suspension, meaning he will sit out the Jets' game against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday.
Tennis
SHANGHAI — Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic overcame tough challenges in their quarterfinals at the Shanghai Masters and moved a step closer to a possible showdown in the final.
Top-ranked Nadal saved three set points and finally closed out a 20-minute tiebreak in the first set against Switzerland's Stanislas Wawrinka before winning 7-6 (10), 6-1.
Djokovic needed 2 ½ hours to rally past Gael Monfils 6-7 (4), 6-2, 6-4.
Djokovic and Nadal improved to a combined 20-0 record against the pair. Their semifinal opponents had much easier matches. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga defeated Florian Mayer 6-2, 6-3, and Juan Martin del Potro advanced with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Nicolas Almagro.
