Penn State defeats Michigan 43-40

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Bill Belton's 2-yard touchdown in the fourth overtime lifted Penn State to a 43-40 win over No. 18 Michigan tonight at Beaver Stadium.
Belton's touchdown came after Michigan safety Jarrod Wilson was called for pass interference on the previous play, which moved the Nittany Lions (4-2, 1-1 Big Ten Conference) from the 11 to the 2.
Michigan kicker Brendan Gibbons went 2 for 4 on field goals in the four overtimes, and missed a 33-yard field goal that would have won the game in the third overtime for Michigan (5-1, 1-1 Big Ten).
Michigan hosts Indiana at 3:30 p.m. Oct. 19 in Ann Arbor.
FOURTH QUARTER
Sam Ficken's point-after kick helped Penn State tie the game at 34-34 with 27 seconds left in the fourth quarter tonight against Michigan at Beaver Stadium, and forced overtime in the Big Ten Conference contest.
Less than five minutes into the fourth quarter, quarterback Devin Gardner found Devin Funchess for a 37-yard touchdown to help Michigan take a 34-24 lead
Ficken's 47-yard field-goal attempt 1:44 into the fourth went wide left, and the Wolverines answered on the ensuing drive.
Ficken cut the lead to 34-27 with 6:35 left on a 43-yard field goal for Penn State, before Nittany Lions quarterback Christian Hackenberg's touchdown with 27 seconds left in the fourth.
Brendan Gibbons' 52-yard field goal attempt with seven seconds left fell short.
THIRD QUARTER
Devin Gardner's 16-yard touchdown pass to Jeremy Gallon with 28 seconds left in the third quarter gave Michigan a 27-24 lead over Penn State going into the fourth quarter tonight at Beaver Stadium
Down 21-10 at the start of the second half, Frank Clark's fumble recovery for a touchdown helped Michigan cut Penn State's lead to four.
Raymon Taylor intercepted Penn State quarterback Christian Hackenberg less than four minutes into the third quarter and four plays later, after tight end Devn Funchess was unable to hold onto a pass from Gardner in the corner of the end zone, Brendan Gibbons' second field goal of the game cut Penn State's lead to 21-20 with 8:50 left in the third.
Sam Fickens' 45-yard field goal with 4:21 left in the third quarter stretched Penn State's lead over Michigan to 24-20.
HALFTIME
Devin Gardner's second interception of the game allowed Penn State to take a 21-10 lead over Michigan at halftime today at Beaver Stadium.
Anthony Zettel intercepted Gardner (6-12-2, 88 yards, one touchdown) less than three minutes into the second quarter, which set up Jesse James' 20-yard touchdown catch on the ensuing play to give the Nittany Lions a 14-10 lead.
Brandon Felder's second touchdown of the game, a 24-yard catch from quarterback Christian Hackenberg (9-15-1 passing, 111 yards, three touchdowns), helped Penn State to a 21-10 lead with 7:06 left in the half.
Michigan linebacker Jake Ryan, playing in his first game this season after undergoing surgery to repair a torn ACL, has two tackles. However, Michigan left tackle Taylor Lewan was taken to the locker room with an unspecified injury.

Devin Funchess' 59-yard touchdown catch tied the game at 7-7 less than 90 seconds later, and Gibbons' longest field goal of the season helped Michigan take the lead.
