  • YPSILANTI, Mich. — Hundreds of Eastern Michigan University students have held a march, rally and candlelight vigil for slain football player Demarius Reed.

The “Increase the Peace” events began this afternoon on its Ypsilanti campus.

Students have carried signs saying “halt the violence,” ‘’SOS” and “peace over politics.”

The 20-year-old communications major from Chicago was shot last Friday in what police say may have been a robbery. A reward for information has been doubled to $10,000.

On Wednesday, school President Susan Martin said that representatives from the university, Ypsilanti police and Washtenaw County sheriff’s department could use joint patrols to increase off-campus safety.

Reed played in six games this season, catching 15 passes for 181 yards and a touchdown.

Visitation for Reed is Friday in Chicago. His funeral is Saturday in Harvey, Ill.
