COLUMBUS — Ohio State and the University of Toledo agreed to a one-game football contract that will send the Rockets to Columbus in 2022.

The two schools announced the agreement on Thursday.

It will be only the fourth-ever meeting between the two programs, who played for the first time in 1998.

The contract calls for Toledo play at Ohio State on Sept. 17, 2022. The Buckeyes are scheduled to open that season with a game at Notre Dame.

Toledo and Ohio State most recently played a psuedo-home-and-home series in 2009 and 2011. The Rockets’ home part of the series actually took place at Cleveland Browns Stadium, where Toledo native Dane Sanzenbacher caught a pair of touchdowns and the Buckeyes rolled to a 38-0 victory in 2009.

In the 2011 game in Columbus, Toledo nearly pulled the upset. The Rockets drove inside the Ohio State 20-yard line in the final minute, but turned over the ball on downs in a 27-22 decision that preserved OSU’s perfect record against fellow Ohio schools since 1921.

Toledo now has games scheduled against Miami (Fla.) at home for 2018, at Michigan State for 2020, at Notre Dame for 2021, and OSU in 2022.

Ohio State has added several games with Mid-American Conference opponents to its future schedules, and is now on track to play a MAC school at least four years in a row. The Buckeyes have contracts on the books with Miami (2019), Buffalo and Bowling Green (2020), Akron (2021), and now Toledo.

The Buckeyes’ schedule is set through 2021. Ohio State is still searching for one more non-conference opponent in the 2022 season, during which a series with Texas originally was slated to begin, but was moved after a mutual agreement between the two athletic departments.
