Mud Hens Ronny Rodriguez named International League's top player in May

  • Former Toledo Mud Hens infielder-outfielder Ronny Rodriguez was named International League player of the month for May, the league announced Monday.

    Rodriguez hit .383 with six homers and 24 RBIs in 28 games in May to help lead Toledo to an 18-12 record. The Hens tied Buffalo and Lehigh Valley for the best winning percentage in the IL in the month, and Rochester also had 18 wins (but lost 13 games).

    Rodriguez led all league hitters in batting average, RBIs, hits (44), and slugging percentage (.652) for the month. The 27-year-old native of the Dominican Republic also was tied for third in runs scored (19) and extra-base hits (17), and tied in fourth for home runs while ranking fifth in on-base percentage (.407) and sixth in doubles (nine).

    Rodriguez produced a 1.059 OPS that also was the best in the league.

    The Tigers called up Rodriguez on May 31 after the 6-foot, 170-pounder batted .318 with eight homers and 35 RBIs in 48 games with the Mud Hens. He currently ranks fourth in the IL in average, is tied for second in RBIs, and is tied for third in runs scored with 31.

    The Mud Hens have Monday off before starting a six-game homestand at Fifth Third Field with the first of three games against Buffalo at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday.
