UT women top Wisconsin-Milwaukee
12/19/2010The University of Toledo women's basketball team nearly got a taste of its own medicine at Savage Arena Sunday.
Fresh off a come-from-behind win over Indiana one week earlier, the Rockets nearly let an 18-point lead slip away before registering a 63-59 win over Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
The visiting Panthers used an impressive 3-point shooting performance by Anne Breland in the second half to take a 59-58 lead with less than a minute to play. But the Rockets scored the game's final five points to hold on for their third straight victory.
“Our team didn't hang their heads when they made their run,” UT coach Tricia Cullop said. “It would have been easy to let the momentum shift and let it go away. But we didn't; we found a way to win at the end, and I'm proud of our team for doing that.
“But I'm hoping in future games we can get a lead and keep it by keeping our intensity up on the defensive end.”
Jessica Williams tied her season high with six 3-pointers to finish with 19 points for Toledo (7-4). Lecretia Smith had 11 points and seven rebounds while Naama Shafir collected 10 points and five assists.
Melissa Goodall, who came into the game scoring a team-high 14.4 points a game, had just four but contributed seven offensive boards.
“It shows how deep and versatile our team is,” Williams said. “On any given night anyone can step up and score 20 points.
“And when our key players aren't scoring, other people are pushing to step up and fill those roles.”
Breland made 6-of-7 three pointers — she was 5-for-5 from behind the arc in the second half — to finish with 22 points for Wisconsin-Milwaukee (3-7). Sami Tucker scored 12 and Lindsay Laur had 10 points and 10 rebounds for UWM.
