COLUMBUS — Gov. Ted Strickland followed through Tuesday night with his promise to vote for Ohio's own Crystal Bowersox.

"In true American democratic fashion, he voted early but only once," said spokesman Amanda Wurst. "But he knows that will be the vote that puts Crystal over the top and makes her the next American Idol."

America will find out Wednesday night whether the governor's vote and lobbying on Ms. Bowersox's behalf paid off. The 24-year-old Elliston, Ohio native is up against Lee DeWyze, 23, of Mount Prospect, Ill., for the top prize.

Ms. Wurst said the governor used his personal cell phone, so taxpayers did not pick up the tab for the call. He also called in his vote rather than texted because he is not an AT&T subscriber.

Ms. Wurst said she was a bit more prolific in her votes, her first for an Idol contestant.
