ILYA Regatta has huge turnout

PUT-IN-BAY - This vintage Lake Erie island is knee-deep in sailing crews, a welcome change from the Inter-Lake Yachting Association regattas of the past few years.

Approximately 209 boats have registered for the Deepwater feeders and the three-day sailing series, according to race chairman Don Bartels.

``Last year, I think we had 109 entries,'' he said.

Bartels gave credit for the increased participation to ILYA Commodore Dennis Mintus of Ashtabula Yacht Club and Dave Caracci of North Cape Yacht Club.

``Everyone worked hard,'' he said, ``but Commodore Mintus did a big job in getting boats from Buffalo and Caracci brought in boats from Catawba Island.''

Other entries came from as far away as South Carolina, Georgia and Florida.

If the race committee did its homework, so did Toledo-area racing crews.

Holy Toledo, co-skippered by Tom Andrews and Clif Vaughan, and Jeff Mackay's Wizard, both from North Cape, placed 1-2 in the Performance Handicap Racing Fleet division's Class B and stood second and third overall in the 48-boat PHRF division.

Holy Toledo finished only six seconds (corrected time) behind Joe Sbrocco's State of Schock, the division and Class A leader in yesterday's race. Jim Davis' Orange Crate took third in Class B.

The PHRF fleet sailed on Course 2, a 15.5-mile route that started west of South Bass Island and rounded Green and Ballast islands. West-to-southwesterly winds were moderate at the start, but became lighter as the morning wore on.

``It was a good race and we had a real good start in nice air'' said Wizard's skipper, Jeff Mackay. ``But we'll have a better chance tomorrow, which probably will be windward-leeward courses. That will be a real challenge.''

Wizard is one of four Evelyn-designed boats in PHRF B.

Jubilate Deo, co-skippered by Jerry Porter and John Stong of North Cape, was the top boat in the 17-boat Jib-and-Main division and JAM Class A.

Jubilate led the entire race, but the last leg - a weather leg going down to the islands where there was a nice breeze - was where she made up her time on the fleet.

``They couldn't catch us to cover us,'' Porter said, ``so they let us go and battled with each other for second - although they probably didn't know that at the time.''

Several fleet and class championships are being held in conjunction with the regatta, including the Midget Ocean Racing Club Internationals, Melges 24 Great Lakes Championship and Hobie Wave Class Great Lakes Championships.

Two firsts and a second put US Sailing Hall-of-Fame skipper Rick White of Key Largo at the head of the Wave Class. Norm Freeman of Michigan was runner-up with a 4-1-2 record.

The Wave, a 13-foot catamaran that tacks on a dime, was introduced at the Bay last year.

``All of us catamaran sailors are looking for a high-tech, high-speed boat, but on the other hand, everyone wants to sail a one-design,'' White said.

``My wife (Hall-of-Famer and world champion) Mary Wells and I figured out that the Wave reduces everything to a common denominator. There's nothing you can do to get an advantage, like using a different sail. All you have to do is sheet, steer and use tactics.

``The only way I won today,'' he said, ``is good starts and good marker rounding.''
