Vargas advances to finals
3/19/2004Toledo s Devin Vargas has advanced to the finals of the Americas Qualifier.
Last night in Tijuana, Mexico, the heavyweight boxer - a 2000 graduate of Start High School - outpointed Kertson Manswell from Trinidad and Tobago, 22-16. As a result, Vargas, 22, advances to tomorrow s finals of the qualifier where he ll meet the winner of last evening s fight between Jason Douglas of Canada and Rafael Lima from Brazil.
The result of that bout was not available at press time.
With a win tomorrow, Vargas will automatically qualify for the final field of 16 fighters in this summer s Olympic Games in Athens.
Should he lose, he will travel to Rio de Janeiro on April 4-11 for a final Americas Qualifier which he must win to fight in Greece.
