Three local swimmers will be competing in the United States Olympic trials, which begin Wednesday in Long Beach, Calif.

The top two finishers in each event qualify for the Olympics, which will be held next month in Athens, Greece.

Patrick Kennedy, a graduate of Northview High School and Texas A&M, will compete in the 100-meter and 200 backstroke. He was a four time All-American at Texas A&M and also competed in the 2000 Olympic Trials.

Katie Carroll, a Notre Dame Academy graduate, will attempt to qualify in the 200 and 400 individual medley. She just completed her freshman year at the University of Notre Dame, where she was named Big East swimmer of the year and earned All-American honors.

Susan Johnson, who was the Big Ten freshman swimmer of the year at Wisconsin this year, will compete in the 200-meter backstroke. She was a teammate of Carroll's at Notre Dame Academy.

The trials conclude July 14.
