Toledoans Fadel, Kornowa set for Ohio Amateur

Six former champions, including Toledoans Alan Fadel and Kevin Kornowa, head a 147-player field entered in the Ohio Amateur Championship that begins a four-day run tomorrow at Findlay Country Club.

Other local golfers scheduled to play in the event include Kurt Kincade and Joey Bussdieker of Toledo, Terry Tyson and Erik Hoops of Perrysburg, Brad Christensen of Swanton and John Powers from Bowling Green.

A number of Findlay golfers hoping to employ some local knowledge include Steven Drake, Robert Orr, Tyler Riley, Blake Tucker and Patrick Stacy.

The field, which includes a 13-year-old named Alec Tahy from Dayton, will be cut to the low 60 and ties after 36 holes and to the low 40 scores and ties after 54 holes.

HOPPLE DEFENDS: The Toledo Women's District Golf Association will stage its Match Play Championship this week at Heather Downs Country Club. Patti Hopple, who plays out of Sylvania CC, will be gunning for her second straight title.

The tournament begins tomorrow and concludes with final matches on Friday.

Sixteen players qualified for the championship flight, including Sally Robinson of Chippewa Golf Club, who led last week's qualifying tournament with a 79.

Sue Stout of Inverness, Rachael Latta of Brandywine and Rosie Feeback of Highland Meadows are among top contenders for the title.

CANCER EVENT: Joan Pitcock, the 1996 Jamie Farr Owens Corning Classic champion, will be the featured attraction tomorrow in a fund-raising event for the V Foundation for Cancer Research being hosted by Gil Maienknecht at Stone Ridge in Bowling Green.

Pitcock, now retired from LPGA Tour play, will give a clinic at 11 a.m. with tee times in the two-person scramble event to follow at noon.
