News of art: Universities to exhibit ceramics for purchase
12/5/2000“Clay By the Books,” a display of ceramics by the Bowling Green State University Clay Club, is in the Wood County District Library, 251 North Main St., Bowling Green, through Dec. 31. The group will hold its annual sale in the BGSU Fine Arts Building Dec. 14-16. Information: 419-354-2555.
Closer to the city, the University of Toledo Ceramics Department will hold its holiday and exhibition sale from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Dec. 15 and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 16 in the Glass Crafts Building, Toledo Museum of Art, Grove Place.
The Toledo Artists' Club Holiday Show opened Nov. 24 in the Club Gallery at Toledo Botanical Garden, 5403 Elmer Dr. Contest winners were announced last week; these include Jiana Jin, best of show; Forest LaPlante, first place; Richard Davis, second, and Betsy Ford, third place. The show will remain on display through Jan. 4.
Spectrum: Friends of Fine Art will host its 2000 Holiday Boutique through Dec. 24 at the gallery in Toledo Botanical Garden. Hours are 1 to 5 p.m. Tuesday-Friday, 1 to 4 p.m. weekends.
Toledo Potters' Guild is taking registrations for pottery classes for adults and children, scheduled to begin Jan. 8. Classes meet weekly at the Toledo Botanical Garden. Information: 535-6937.
The International Writers and Artists Association and University of Toledo Department of Foreign Languages are exhibiting the annual Mail Art Show through Dec. 30 in University Hall, Room 5130G. More than 500 artworks and colorful messages from around the world are on display.
Holiday artwork and crafts are featured through December in SeaGate Gallery, a local artists' sales gallery at the plaza level of the Owens-Illinois World Headquarters building on Summit Street. Gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays.
Richard Billings' oil and pastel paintings are on display in Wesley Memorial Gallery, 900 Van Buren St., Fostoria, through Jan. 14. The gallery is open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.
The University of Toledo Lake Erie Center Art Exhibit will present “Illumination Night,” illuminated artworks by UT metalworkers and installation artists, Dec. 11-31 in the center at 6200 Bayshore Rd., Oregon. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays. An opening reception is planned for 6 to 9 p.m. Dec. 15.

“Tradition With a Twist,” an exhibit of contemporary fiber arts, is in Epstein Gallery at the Jewish Community Center of Metropolitan Detroit, 6600 West Maple Rd., West Bloomfield, through Jan. 31. Sylvania artist Sherri Roberts is one of 23 area Judaica artists featured in the show.
“Among the Believers,” an exhibit of works by Javier Carmona, is in Stubnitz Gallery, Adrian College, Adrian, through Saturday.
Habatat Galleries has been showing works by glassmaker Dale Chihuly for 25 years. Now gallery and artist are marking their long relationship with two exhibitions: a retrospective, and an in-depth show of Chihuly's Persian Series. The shows run through Jan. 20 in the gallery at 7 North Saginaw St., Pontiac. Hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday.
Birds, bugs, and bones are just the beginning in the Robbins Center at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where “Scientific Illustration: It's Only Natural” is open through Dec. 15. The Scientific Illustration Club at the School of Art and Design shows off its work at this annual display.
“Casting Shadow: Photographs by Edward West” is in the University of Michigan Museum of Art, 525 South State St., Ann Arbor, through Jan. 28.
