Downtown gallery plans to open its second exhibit

SPACE237, the newest downtown gallery at 237 North Michigan St., will open its second exhibition with a reception Friday. Featured in the show “Canvas vs. Steel” are five young painters and sculptors - Jason Nickel, Greg Noviski, Stephan Rittenbery, Eric Small, and Brian Tubbs - who will install their paintings and mixed media sculpture for viewing through Feb. 24.

The opening reception will feature music by Michael Szuberla and food by young chefs Sarah Osborne and Pete Vauthy. The party is to start at 7 and continue to midnight. Gallery hours are noon to 5 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday.

  • Bowling Green State University continues several exhibitions through the month at its Fine Arts Center galleries. In the Dorothy Uber Bryan Gallery, the 51st annual faculty and staff exhibition, featuring sculpture done on sabbatical by Shawn Morin, will be on view through Jan. 25.

    The Willard Wankleman Gallery is showing “The Lopsided Grin: Facing the New Century,” with a collection of visual farces and satires by artists including Ed Paschke, Mark Soppeland, Gladys Nillson, and Masami Teraoka. The show runs through Feb. 1. On Jan. 26, Eleanor Spiess-Ferris, another artist in the exhibit, will speak on her view of human nature at 7 p.m. in Room 204 of the Fine Arts Building.

  • The Sandusky Cultural Center has opened an exhibition of works in clay by 11 artists. Works include vessels, sculpture, portraits, and more, all relating to ideas formed in childhood. Among the artists are Todd Leech, Jenny Mendes, Boris Vitlin, Corey Thrush, Theresa Yondo, and Greg Bryant.

    Works may be seen through Feb. 11 in the gallery in Sandusky High School, 2130 Hayes Ave., where hours are 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday-Friday.

    MICHIGAN

    The Michigan Guild Gallery in Ann Arbor will open “366 Days,” an installation and collection of recent works in mixed media by Heidi Dauphin, on Jan. 16. Hours at the gallery, 118 North Fourth Ave., are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays. The show will run through Feb. 16.

  • The Ann Arbor Art Center, 117 West Liberty St., will open an exhibition, “Now's Her Time: Women in Art in the Last Decade,” on Friday. Five artists - Eunhee Im, Meridith Ridl Kalajainen, Susanne Kilpela, Patricia Mink, and Kate Roesch reveal their perspectives through a variety of media. Artist and art historian Hope Palmer will give a free lecture at 6 p.m. Friday in the gallery, where hours are are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday-Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday.
